A complete rewrite is more or less what will happen because the whole backend (including filtering) will be provided by Akonadi. Since filtering will be done by Akonadi KMail (which will then basically be just a GUI for Akonadi) will stay responsive.
As for comment #148 I think this might be caused by the quick search in the Kicker menu which also lists email addresses AFAIK.
