Note: for me this is no longer very important, because the new cachedimap account type ("Disconnected IMAP") does not exhibit this behavior.  On my Mac OS X 10.5 MacBook Pro, running KDE 3.5.7 (under X11), with a cachedimap account, I can receive mail, put the laptop to sleep, wake it up, and receive more mail.  The need to quit and re-start KMail went away when I switched to the new cachedimap account type.
