Kolab 3.0 Client communication - where to start reading

I'm interested in the Client-communication of Kolab 3.0 - especially what it would need to write your own client library. Unfortunatly Akonadi is major crap and consuming far too much ressources - so I'm not really happy with Kontact/KDE-Pim. Perhaps it's worth to consider writing a library (or a wrapper for libkolab) for another PIM Software.
