Could you create a user in this new domain and tell me where exactly it 
is located in the directory information tree after you add it, provided 
you still have configured:

[newdomain.org]
base_dn = dc=newdomain,dc=org

I suspect it is uid=$uid,dc=newdomain,dc=org, in which case I'm afraid 
you're running in to bug #1466:
