Could you point us to the "several plugins available for that"?

The suggested XMPP plugin for Roundcube is based on converse.js [1].
And there's a promising WebRTC broker available from jitsi.org [2] which
IMO would make sense to be integrated directly into converse.js

Unfortunately I'm lacking time to dig into a possible integration right now.
