For the symbolism issue, I suspect it's due to commit 79c6838fd93 [1].

That is, try enabling 'Word mode' under

Edit Profile / Appearance / Complext Text Layout

if it is disabled.

The issue I described seems to start with commit be76d4a2480 [2].
