The first option was what I expected – rendering new lines of the terminal and
searching probably should be asynchronous, in separate threads. If that's
infeasible, I think having it ask the user whether it should continue would
probably be a better way to do the second option (since it doesn't *prevent*
long searches for those who deliberately want to), a bit like GDB's
paging-by-default.
