configure probs on RH7.3

I have been trying to install kpm on a new RH7.3 system installed on a
laptop.  Even though I have downloaded Mesa and installed it, the
configure script keeps saying I am missing "at least one of
opengl(mesa),  glu, glut, glx".  It then directs me to www.mesa.org
(should be mesa3d) to get the missing component(s).

Any suggestions?
