Hi! 
 
I have 8.2 and a radeon mobility. Those were precisely the 
simptons. Tuxracer ran fine but kpovmodeler and canon 
smash froze the system. 
 
I hope you have luck with the CVS drivers. 
 
I don't know a way to select software rendering on the 
fly. Kpovmodeler has a --no-opengl option but it will 
behave just like making hasOpenGL return false.
