help! cannot install

Hello, I have tried to install kPovmodeler and am having some trouble.
The configure app told me I needed to install GLUT.I was pretty sure I
already had it, but decided that configure knows best what it needs, so
I went to the Mesa home page, downloaded the latest (stable) release
5.0.2, and installed. I'm pretty sure the installation went OK (no
serious error messages or anything). I then again tried to configure
kpovmodeler, and it STILL tells me I need GLUT. This time, I decided to
look for myself, and discovered that I do indeed have two files in
/usr/lib for glut, libglut.so.3 which is a link to another file in
/usr/lib, libglut.so.3.7
Are these the files I need? If so, why doesn't configure see them? If
not, how can I verify manually that I either do or do not have the
files, and how can I be sure that MESA install went OK?
And How can I get kpovmodeler installed?!?

I'm running KDE with redhat 9.0
