Unfortunately, you aren't wrong. I had problems with Irony a few months back and there is very little hope in getting stuff working. There are a few people in the community that are really helpful, but sometimes it isn't enough. I still have servers running Centos 7 + Kolab, which are basically just used as IMAP servers. Any new servers I have deployed are running Dovecot + Postfixadmin (https://github.com/postfixadmin/postfixadmin) I have experimented with Nextclould's mail interface which seems to be getting a lot of attention.
