I run mine off CentOS and am afraid I don't play with Ubuntu too much, 
Linux Mint has worked fairly well in my labs (for fun). Do you have logs 
by any chance? There are typically in /var/

I'm fairly new to this platform myself but it is helpful to try creating 
a user using _kolab cm

That does not really help you, but just to confirm that this is indeed an i=
ssue (on Ubuntu).
