  If I think about my reasons for proposing it, it's mostly due to bugs with the QQC2 TabBar implementation. Specifically https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=394296 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=394295. If those bugs were fixed, I think a tabbed UI would be fine on the desktop.
