I think what you may want is Edit ==> Block Selection Mode (<ctrl><shift>b).

It may not do everything you want -- iirc, you can delete / copy things well 
enough, but I'm not sure paste will do the right thing (the thing that you 
want to do) -- I don't use it very often.
