Thank you for this move towards a solution, Christoph. I have read a ping-pong versus "its a good change" and "it does not work for me" in this thread. It appears to be a right versus wrong kind of thread which could basically go on forever. I wonder what would happen if I consider it is not about right versus wrong, but about preferences. Some like it this way, some like it another way. Am I to judge whether their reasons are good ones? Probably not. So I wonder: What would be the cost, implementation wise, to make this behavior optional? Today I received the update to KWrite / Kate 21.12 via Devuan Ceres (Debian Sid). I immediately switched off the empty window dialog in both apps. In most apps I do not tolerate these. My Firefox profiles start with an empty page. I know where to go and auto completion in URL bar was good enough. And the best of this: It was just one click. Gone it was. No need to argue about anything: I could have it my way, others could have it their way and I even get that this empty window dialog could help beginners. So what would be the cost to make the new settings in main window thing optional? If it is low, I strongly suggest to settle that argument in this way. Its not that we have somewhat similar options elsewhere like Kontact with all the apps inside of it or all or some KDEPIM apps being separate. As to my own preferences: I don't know yet. I probably would make Kate settings an extra window again in case it would be non-modal. Best, -- Martin
