AFAIK, Quanta still works - you didn't mention anything specific (or  
your OS). The beauty of FOSS, you can keep using it as long as it  
works for you :)

Anecdotally: I'm more than paying the rent using Eclipse :)

Eclipse has it's share of problems, but it certainly isn't anything to  
sneeze at. It's performance has been progressively improving over the  
past few releases. In my case, I'm using OS X, so java's initial  
startup is really about the same as X11 + kdeinit + quanta. But I  
wouldn't be surprised if on Linux using KDE as your desktop  
environment, quanta is way faster :).

In my case, I've always been pleased with Quanta. I've just been  
waiting for the KDE4 port of everything to be stable; using X11 just  
became enough of a pain that it was worth the switch to Eclipse. I'm  
doing primarily Drupal development, so PDT's (and the SVN) features  
really come in handy. I'm sure Quanta can do code completion, but I  
could never figure it out; in this case, blame the user!

Though it's been nearly 2 years since I've actually used Quanta for  
day to day use, I remain subscribed to this list primarily because out  
of all the mailing lists I've subscribed to, this one has a really  
good response rate from the developers. Once the upstream KDE4 on OS X  
is done, I really think Quanta again will be a first-rate contender  
for this kind of work on OS X.
