Do you have all of the required kde dependencies installed? If so, you may
as well run KDE :)

In Konquerer run this command:
ftp://example.com[:port]
Do you get the FTP credentials prompt?

Also in linux, try doing a
$ telnet example.com 21

USER foo
PASS xxx

and see if you can connect
