Many thanks for this very helpful answer. You were right - my Digikam 
version (from the Linux Mint Software Manager) came as a Flatpak, which 
seems similar to Snap. When I deleted it and installed the Appimage, I 
was immediately able to locate my new Pictures directory in the First 
Run Wizard. After a while indexing my images, I was back in business - 
with all the old tags, captions, etc, preserved.

Sorry it's taken a few days to reply - I had two events over the 
weekend, creating 300 new images for my collection.
