I think it might depend on exactly which widget and where you are using  
it.  I have a digital clock on my desktop, and if I right-click on it,  
one of the options is "Configure Digital Clock."  Near the bottom of  
the dialog is "Date format:" and the options are Long date, Short Date,  
ISO, and Custom.  If this is not sufficient to you, please be a bit  
more specific about where you get and use the widget.
