Facebook

Hey,

We've discussed this before, but I've poked around and come to some 
conclusions and would now like to get some definite progress on this.

We have two main fan pages on Facebook:

"KDE"
- Outdated official info, no new official conent coming in
- 3907 fans and an active fan community
- We do not know who owns this and the owner seems inactive

"K Desktop Environment"
- Official info kept up to date,  syndication of Dot stories and official news 
posted around releases
- 2355 fans who are reasonably active
- 5 currently active KDE people as admins (Lydia, Aaron, Will, Seb, me)
- Bad page name: there is no K Desktop Environment
- Posts I made officially to K Desktop Environment and as a fan to KDE around 
the 4.5 release day are much more liked and commented on in K Desktop 
Environment - probably because official posts show up in Facebook news feeds.

Some facts about Facebook:
- You cannot change a page name :-(
- You cannot easily find out who owns a page
- It sucks in general ;-)

If we get control of "KDE" or communication with the owner we can:
- Update the description
- Give it syndication of Dot stories as per "K Desktop Environment"

This is good because:
- Someone searching KDE will find and join an active and useful page ("KDE" 
already has the larger fanbase, even though it lacks content compared to "K 
Desktop Environment")
- We can add a note to the "K Desktop Environment" page asking new users to 
sign up at "KDE" instead
- We can add a news item  and message all fans to ask them to switch to "KDE"
- *Maybe* retire "K Desktop Environment" at some point

The only way of getting in touch with the owner of "KDE" seems to be to use 
this form:

Here we can point to the use of the KDE trademark, trying to word it as nicely 
as possible (afterall the owner is probably a - perhaps inactive - KDE person 
and even if not seems to have good intentions)
This should come from someone "legally authorised to act on behalf of the 
owner" of the IP rights. It's DMCA-style evil, but unless my suggestions below 
work, we don't really have other options.

Proposed plan:
- I will ask on planetkde.org for the owner of the KDE page to come forward
- Ask elsewhere - kde-ev mailing list?
- If we haven't identified the owner within two weeks (of asking, not of now) I 
can make a request to Facebook using the form above. For this I would like the 
express approval of a board member (the "legally authorised to act on behalf 
of the owner" bit) or for one of them/Claudia to make the request.
- Once we have contact or admin control of "KDE" we/I can set it up the same 
way as K Desktop environment and start on the 'good' stuff above.
