even if it never comes to a fork or a similar dramatic event, it would be a 
stronger position for KDE to be in and therefore can only be advantageous. for 
instance, it would be easier for KDE to get software on mobile devices if we 
had a bigger Qt footprint.

personally, i believe we should really try and avoid the "if we need to fork" 
mentality. prophecies can become self-fulfilling and we need to focus on 
finding the opportunities in this situation rather than putting disaster 
planning as our initial positioning. we do need disaster planning (not that 
we've ever really done that in the past, which is why people freak out when 
things go evena little gray, btw), but we shouldn't lead with it.

the secondary effect of talking about forking is that it can (and will) make 
some of our existing partners queasy and lower trust with us as a result. yes, 
Nokia, even though it's zagging where it should be zigging, is still a partner 
and has useful resources for us to participate with.

i'm very happy about the Qt on Android project (nice work, Bogdan!), but from 
a promo and community POV i was less happy to see the swipes taken at Nokia in 
relation to it on, for instance, the slashdot announcement. it does little but 
chip away at the morale and trust within the Qt community. more chaos does not 
make existing chaos go away, it only chases off opportunities.

i think we can be, and indeed _are _better than that. even when someone like 
Nokia throws us a curveball, we should try and remain centered and positive 
while we remain realistic and maybe even a little opportunistic. that is a 
hallmark of effective, inspirational leadership, and it will gain a lot more 
traction for us in the Qt community than speaking of forks and "throwing 
developers under a bus".

p.s. i relied to Jos' email because it was convenient and topical, not because 
Jos or his email warrant this particular response on its own ... :)

p.p.s. it's great to see most people remain in the positive, churning forward 
with great new ideas. something like this would've dunked us under the water 
really good a few years back, but we've grown stronger, bigger and more self 
confident. in a word, we've _matured_ quite a bit as a group. that is really 
cool to see and i have a lot of respect for all of you have been and are 
involved in that trend.
