True, some people use virtual desktops for a similar purpose. However,
whereas virtual desktops can be used to separate between tasks, activities
(in my opinion) represent a completely new workflow. We're used to start
applications and switch between them. With activities, it's rather about
starting new activities and switching between them - no need to launch the
same applications again.

I've found it useful to not mix virtual desktops and activities when
explaining the latter. I also believe activities are easier to explain to
new users - people I've observed are usually confused about virtual
desktops ("if I click on the square all my windows disappear!") and don't
get what to use them for. With activities, you can tell them to simply
create a new activities for each of their computer activities. Virtual
desktops can then be introduced if they want more spatial space to separate
between windows.
