Hi to everybody, Moin an's Praemandatum-Team, > > One important question certainly is: Who is going to invest > into the presentation. My company Intevation certainly has > the knowledge to show and support Free Software tablets, > likewise other companies and individuals have. > However even to do a one day workshop which of course should display a product > which is as good as it can, would be a significant investment. > I would like to state, that a commitment for an open tablet should *not* be non-commercial, meaning: There should be and there is a perspective for earning money with such a system [While as an outsider I am always wondering how programmer's work is paid, e.g. the fantastic KDE-environment...] Maybe it sounds like a political campaign 'There are only a few days left to save the world...', but: Fact is, this tablet-project in Lower Saxony is started, supported with political power from the administration, and last but not least a workshop 'Free Knowledge - Free Software' at ZIM/Hildesheim with the FSFE activated a certain consciousness for alternatives beside tablet-devices with iOS or Android. And - short version - these devices coming from consumer-market do not fulfill their promises in school until now. The thing to do is presenting an alternative NOW, I think. >> So I seek (THE MAXIMUM): >> An IT-professional with an insight view to KDE-Plasma-Active and with >> about 15 prepared (maybe different) tablets and fully working OS >> including a touch-optimized office-suite, mutimedia-player and working >> multimedia-devices. This person presents also a glossy booklet where to >> buy at least 30 of these machines and a second booklet from an >> IT-company which offers support to interested schools. I forgot the winking smiley, but of course I dont expect that! The question is: How can we present such a tablet? What about Aaron Seigo? What about BasysKom? What is a 'significant investment'? Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and other global players go in and out at the old-fashioned ZIM/Hildesheim and use their strong marketing to place their products. An event like this would be visited by official media-consultants who consults schools what to buy and what to use. What about that in commercial view? > Note that most sold tablets with Android are ARM architecture currently > and thus running Android. As far as I know there is no good Android-ARM > packaging for Plasma-Active so far. > So maybe demonstrating a non-Android or non-ARM systen could be easier > to show the maturity of the software. So an ViewSonic Viewpad 10 [1] is in this case the best choice? All other devices seem to be netbooks/integrated touchscreens, right? Is there a chance to get one or more machines- bought maybe from ZIM/NLQ - equipped with KDE-Plasma-Active by professionals, means: You ? > > As an office suite you can show Calligra. > For Email and Calenders you can try Kontact Touch. Mail (Kontact Touch) under PlasmaActive worked wonderful, but I've never seen Calligra working. A Mail-client has a low priority for school. For an educational tablet a browser, a multimedia-player and an office-suite is needed. Updated date (The question of 'When?'): "27./28.06.12 (wohl in Verden) 04./05.07.12 vielleicht in Hildesheim" At KDE-booth at Cebit 2012 somebody told better not to present an unfinished open tablet. Since PlasmaActiceTwo quite a time past. So what is the state of this project? What about a K-Ubuntu equipped system? Should I plan such an event anyway? >> Please contact me very soon! >> >> There is an open door to establish a KDE-tablet in schools. All of the >> proprietary tablet-systems own heavy disadvantages, which appear much >> more negative in school-environment. So please support this workshop.
