For instance, I understand the idea that system tool icons are a monochrome set, and that distinguishes them from application icons, but users don't understand that, and many complain that it makes the panel look untidy. I do wonder whether, if we want to keep the principle, we should simply have the same simply icons but in a single colour instead of white. Of course there may be problems with this, but if it works, something that annoys many users would simply disappear. Actually, I find the fact that they are smaller than application icons much more annoying. I assume that is because they have to fit into a tray that itself fits into the panel. I have a feeling that a brainstorming session or a browse through the forum would unmask a number of things that are almost irrelevant to developers, but an annoyance to users. Fixing those would give a big boost to user perceptions.
