Since I've never moved from gnome to kde I don't know how much desktop directory stuff would still be useful/visible. All I know is that a vociferous minority (at least I *think* it's a minority) want everything to behave in much the same way as KDE 3 and Windows before it. I'm not saying that that's the way we want to encourage, but nor do we want to drive them away if that's their preference. They are "our users" too.
