Hi again everyone, Lydia replied back this afternoon with her completed interview as well. Please let me know if there is anything I can do on the back-end with these interviews. Although I am excited to bring back the BKDE interviews, I don't want to put extra burden on already busy folks making awesome things happen :-) Thanks again! Lydia Pintscher Interview: Could you start by telling us a little about yourself? I'm Lydia. I live in Germany - Berlin since recently. I have been involved in Free Software for about 7 years now. I am doing a lot of work around getting people involved in Free Software, community management, mentoring and generally making sure things run smoothly. I help people make awesome happen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What do you do for a living? I work for Wikimedia Deutschland, doing community communications for Wikidata (http://wikidata.org). Wikidata is a huge undertaking to create a central free and open data repository for the Wikipedias and the world. We're bringing structured data to Wikipedia on a large scale. It's an incredible job and I enjoy working with the Wikimedia community a lot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What do you do for KDE? I do a lot of things. The major ones are probably being a board member of KDE e.V., the non-profit that supports KDE, being a part of the team that runs KDE's mentoring programs and I am a member of KDE's Community Working Group. As part of my board duties I do things like talking to our individual and corporate supporters, deciding on what to spend KDE e.V.'s money on, talking to other organisations and the press and all the other nitty-gritty details that need to get done when running a non-profit. All this work helps to make sure that KDE is able to do what it wants to achieve. Each year KDE is mentoring a lot of students through its mentoring programs. It is the largest organisation taking part in Google Summer of Code. Through that program alone we have mentored over 300 students and helped them make significant contributions to Free Software. In addition we are running Season of KDE with over 200 students by now. Both programs have changed the life of many of the students. This is what it's all about for me. KDE is an amazing community. At the size of KDE this doesn't necessarily stay this way automatically however. The Community Working Group is there to help keep the KDE healthy. It can help with mediation for example. As part of this group I also helped write KDE's Code of Conduct. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How did you get started contributing to KDE? Early in my computer science studies I switched to Linux and ended up using KDE's software. It all worked together so nicely and did everything I needed. It was exactly what I wanted. I was fascinated by the ideas behind Free Software and what was possible with them. A friend of mine from university (Sven Krohlas) was contributing to Amarok and so I starting doing small stuff for Amarok here and there, mostly writing marketing material. After a while Linuxtag was coming up and Sven said he needs another person to help at the Amarok booth. He was pretty determined that I was going to be this person. So I ended up manning the booth at Linuxtag, met a lot of amazing people and was hooked. And this started the journey to where I am today and opened me opportunities I could not have dreamed of before this all started. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How much time do you spend working on KDE? Haha. Way too much. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can you tell us about KDE's involvement with the Google Summer of Code project? I think I covered this in the previous question. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What keeps you motivated? Waht keeps me motivated is knowing that what I do makes a difference in someone's life. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are some of your future goals for your involvement with KDE? I'll be focusing on helping KDE stay relevant and amazing in an ever changing ecosystem. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are some of your hobbies and intrests outside of KDE? I love traveling around the world and meeting new people and seeing new places. I also like to knit but I don't get to that too much lately unfortunately.
