We just had an exhibit at LinuxCon in San Diego, US. It had only the
KDE 3D logo, no words. Due to the audience being mostly free software
participants, people already had their own ideas of KDE...text would
probably have been distracting.

For an event where there are people who may not be familiar with KDE,
text would be useful. It would be worthwhile developing text
appropriate to a banner of this large size. The banner should be
recognizable by featuring the KDE logo and memorable. And the goal of
the banner is to attract attention and call people to investigate
further. The banner should not try to tell the KDE story in detail.

At the exhibit mentioned above, we had some business card sized
brochures (2 x 3.5 in; about 5 x 9 cm). The text accompanying the logo
was "Elegant and Free". That would work on a banner too.

Any text should follow these
guidelines...http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Guidelines/CIG/Typeface

I don't know of any existing banner content, but others may.
