It is not about confusion, is it about finding the data where you expect it. 
If i am doing an article about when 4.9 was released, i expect to go to the 
4.9 announcement and find it, sure it is available in lots of other places 
like the wikipedia, but that's not where i expect to find it.

Now let me ask you, is it really so much of an issue to add a single line with 
the date?
