Hello, Here are the logs for today's Promo meeting. The main topics we covered were: 1.- Long term goals (https://phabricator.kde.org/T5782): We agreed that "long term" means "5 years" We need to tweak goals so that "Promo" goals do not read like we are setting goals for the whole community. The rest of the team will pitch suggestions and comments on how to phrase the goals themselves. 2.- External events (https://phabricator.kde.org/T8043): For ELCE (https://phabricator.kde.org/T9649) we have a proposal of a theme from Jens: "KDE - You are here" or "KDE: Go where you want to be". Visually it will be all about maps, mapping the future of mobile and embedded, similar topic for QtWS to be able to re-use the theme Paul and Adriaan are staffing the booth, but we need one more person to help, ideally another two. We talked about what we will have on display, including an instance of Mycroft attendees can interact with, and hardware. 3.- Social Media Access Policy (https://phabricator.kde.org/T9468): Paul will talk to sysadmin on how we can deposit credentials securely with them. Attendees suggested some more social media platforms (such as Instagram) we should consider using. Tosky will do some research into APIs and so on so we can manage everything better. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:31:18 (CEST)] <Bro666> Meeting time! [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:32:05 (CEST)] <Bro666> Hello and welcom to our 4th Promo meeting [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:32:11 (CEST)] <Bro666> welcome [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:32:17 (CEST)] <Nightrose> hey [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:32:20 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <jriddell> awooga [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:32:26 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> hi all [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:33:05 (CEST)] <Bro666> Where do you want to start, @skadinna? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:33:33 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> Since no one else proposed a topic except you, let's start with yours so we can move that task forward (hopefully) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:33:36 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <ilyaishere> Hello) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:33:53 (CEST)] <Bro666> Ok [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:34:29 (CEST)] <Bro666> Some months ago we talked about creating a task that would help us define Promo's long term goals [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:34:49 (CEST)] <Bro666> The task is here: https://phabricator.kde.org/T5782 [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:35:03 (CEST)] <Bro666> However it is still in the draft form [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:35:20 (CEST)] <Bro666> First I am not sure what to call "long term" [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:35:36 (CEST)] <Bro666> I came up with a random period: 10 years [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:36:05 (CEST)] <Bro666> But I don't know if that is too long or not long enough [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:36:58 (CEST)] <Bro666> Of we can define what we mean by "long term" it would help define better what we can aim for in that time [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:37:30 (CEST)] <Bro666> So, a very simple way of contributing to this task would be commenting on that [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:38:07 (CEST)] <[ade]> i'll call 10 years "too long" [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:38:28 (CEST)] <Bro666> So long term would be say half? 5 years? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:38:56 (CEST)] <[ade]> yeah, something like that. consider that our "long term goals" as a community (privacy, ..) have a 3-5 year timespan IIRC [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:39:40 (CEST)] <Bro666> Good point that of keeping these things in sync [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:39:44 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> 5 years sounds good to me as well [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:40:30 (CEST)] <Bro666> Anyone else? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:40:35 (CEST)] <Nightrose> Observation: When I read this a while ago it seemed to mix goals of promo and the larger community. it might be worth keeping those separate as promo doesn't set goals for the community as a whole. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:40:54 (CEST)] <[ade]> the description of the community -- while male middle class -- is possibly 80% correct, but I believe there's a bubble effect as well (e.g. KDE.br doesn't look like that, and neither does KDE India) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:41:07 (CEST)] <Bro666> Yes, that is kind of point number 2 [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:41:29 (CEST)] <Bro666> (talking about Nightrose's observation) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:42:14 (CEST)] <[ade]> Somewhere in these goals there should be short-term-goal "explain to the KDE development community and KDE e.V. membership that -promo isn't for *them*, it's for the outside world, and messaging inside the community is incidental to what -promo does" [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:42:32 (CEST)] <[ade]> .. at least, that's a short-term goal you've repeatedly said to me. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:42:48 (CEST)] <Bro666> I have since adjusted the text, but I am still struggling with making the goals those of Promo only [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:43:04 (CEST)] <[ade]> Why bring it up during long-term goal-setting? Because you're going to get pushback unless the purpose, -promo outside of the immediate development community, is clear. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:43:11 (CEST)] <Nightrose> Yeah it is not easy to keep these apart. They must in some parts be intertwined even. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:43:35 (CEST)] <Nightrose> But it's worth to try and see where we are telling the wider community what to do and where we tell us what to do [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:44:07 (CEST)] <Nightrose> [ade]: agreed [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:44:29 (CEST)] <Bro666> So we need feedback on that [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:45:27 (CEST)] <Bro666> And it is a task that has been dragging a bit for some time [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:45:40 (CEST)] <[ade]> Under # Others, the professional use: there's stories to be told there; large Brasilian KDE deplotments. My room-mate at Akademy, who does IT for a 15-person company all KDE. ... I believe that there's more professional use than we know of, because people don't talk about it (which means I disbelieve the "also very low" statement) -- how to get actual data on this? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:46:21 (CEST)] <[ade]> Devices remains an interesting topic (there is, as you say, ongoing progress) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:46:33 (CEST)] <Bro666> As in branding [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:46:49 (CEST)] * [ade] is done discussing the background part of that task [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:47:10 (CEST)] <[ade]> er, must welcome the mother of my children home. Back in a few :) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:47:16 (CEST)] <Bro666> Ok [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:48:21 (CEST)] <Bro666> Not to deviate too much from the topic, but collecting data is another area for which we have ongoing tasks [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:48:48 (CEST)] <Bro666> We know some stuff, we don't know a lot of other stuff [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:49:08 (CEST)] <Bro666> Bring what you know to the task so we can better define also where we are [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:49:15 (CEST)] Error looks: Unknown command. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:50:22 (CEST)] <Bro666> Like [ade]'s example mentioned above [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:51:10 (CEST)] <Bro666> The takeaway from this would be go to the task (https://phabricator.kde.org/T5782), suggest, comment, rectify [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:51:23 (CEST)] <Bro666> See if we can get it finished for the end of the week [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:51:35 (CEST)] <Bro666> Agreed? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:52:28 (CEST)] <Bro666> Then we'll put it on the wiki [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:53:48 (CEST)] <Bro666> Yes? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:54:12 (CEST)] <Nightrose> Souonds good [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:54:26 (CEST)] <Bro666> jsut before we move on... [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:54:32 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> maybe we should send this to the mailing list as well, for those who are not here (and don't read logs) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:54:47 (CEST)] <Nightrose> Good idea [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:54:58 (CEST)] <[ade]> OK, i'll put comments on that tasdk [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:55:22 (CEST)] <Bro666> This thing that "Promo is more for the outside world" is kind of explained in Promo's yearly report [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:55:32 (CEST)] <Bro666> Which has not been published yet [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:56:20 (CEST)] <Bro666> Hopefully that document will clarify a lot of things [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:57:01 (CEST)] <Bro666> Shall we move on? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:57:50 (CEST)] <Nightrose> jep [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:58:37 (CEST)] <Bro666> @skadinna? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:58:43 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> sure [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:59:11 (CEST)] <Bro666> What's next on your agenda? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:59:25 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> could we perhaps try to brainstorm a theme for our QtWS presence? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:59:32 (CEST)] <Bro666> Ah! [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:59:33 (CEST)] <bshah> I have one (minor) item for later [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:59:38 (CEST)] <Bro666> I have news on that [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [17:59:52 (CEST)] <Bro666> Jens came up with a theme [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:00:04 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> that's good news, then :D [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:00:18 (CEST)] <Bro666> That we'll probably take to ELCE and also to QtWS [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:00:50 (CEST)] <Bro666> One sec... let me look up the correct wording [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:01:13 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <jriddell> I'm still waiting on https://phabricator.kde.org/T9468 to be implemented [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:02:19 (CEST)] <Bro666> Can we talk about that in a minute @jriddell? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:02:39 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <jriddell> sure [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:03:00 (CEST)] * [ade] has "catch up on ELCE & QtWS stuff" on his plate [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:03:06 (CEST)] <[ade]> .. and not much success with it, yet [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:03:47 (CEST)] <Bro666> Theme is "KDE - You are here" or "KDE - Go where you want to be" [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:04:02 (CEST)] <Bro666> Visually, the theme is maps [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:04:16 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> MAPS!! omg I'm going to love this [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:04:19 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> I love maps [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:04:35 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> sorry, I got too excited 😅 [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:04:47 (CEST)] <Bro666> Exploring the exciting world of mobile and associated technologies [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:05:20 (CEST)] <Bro666> Jens suggested having and instance of Mycroft at the booth that could guide people through the event [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:06:05 (CEST)] <Bro666> And of course a bunch of devices to play with too [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:06:45 (CEST)] <Bro666> I made a list of my dream layout at https://phabricator.kde.org/T9649 [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:06:48 (CEST)] <[ade]> that's expecting a lot from Mycroft, possibly [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:06:57 (CEST)] <[ade]> .. but spiffy, nonetheless [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:07:03 (CEST)] <Bro666> Possibly [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:07:12 (CEST)] <bshah> hm [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:07:20 (CEST)] <bshah> Mycroft is not exactly KDE technology [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:07:44 (CEST)] <Bro666> Well... it is becoming associated with KDE [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:07:47 (CEST)] <bshah> nor is, something targeted towards audience in the two conference [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:07:51 (CEST)] <bshah> Sure.. but ^^ [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:08:03 (CEST)] <Bro666> Okay... Let's be clear here [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:08:06 (CEST)] <bshah> QtWS, we want to sell our frameworks, plasma and applications [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:08:09 (CEST)] <Bro666> Mycroft is just a hook [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:08:31 (CEST)] <Bro666> Like having Ribuk's cubes with Samsung's logo on it [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:08:45 (CEST)] <Bro666> (that was a hook at Samsung's booth some years ago) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:08:47 (CEST)] <bshah> Don't take me wrong on this, I like idea. but feels awkard having it on this two events [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:09:08 (CEST)] <[ade]> ok, we may need to distinguish the two events. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:09:22 (CEST)] <[ade]> and ELC is much nearer in time, so that should be the one to focus on. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:09:29 (CEST)] <Bro666> The meat of the booth, at leat at ELCE is going to be devices [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:09:39 (CEST)] <Bro666> Becasue that is what the conference is about [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:09:56 (CEST)] <[ade]> .. slightly different audience, but similar in the sense of developer & technology oriented, where we fit but don't have much mindshare [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:10:00 (CEST)] <Bro666> So, if you read https://phabricator.kde.org/T9649#159366 [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:10:09 (CEST)] <Bro666> That would be an ideal spread for me [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:11:04 (CEST)] <bshah> for record, Halium is not KDE project [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:11:32 (CEST)] <Bro666> @bhsah, but we participate in it right? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:11:51 (CEST)] <bshah> (neither vision nor technically it fits with-in KDE, I would prefer to keep it seperate..) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:12:31 (CEST)] <Bro666> If it succeeds does it help us? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:12:44 (CEST)] <bshah> we participate it in sure, but Halium's main aim is to make use of properitory software, and that doesn't fit with-in KDE vision [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:13:11 (CEST)] <bshah> Show-case Plasma Mobile sure, but Halium, I don't entirely like idea [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:15:16 (CEST)] Quit kbroulik (~quassel@kde/broulik) has left this server (Remote host closed the connection). [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:15:35 (CEST)] <Bro666> First of all: Halium will not be center stage by any means [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:16:14 (CEST)] <bshah> I get that, but I don't like halium being promoted at all [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:16:48 (CEST)] <bshah> it's just underlying tech Plasma Mobile uses, and nothing ELCE have to care about [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:16:57 (CEST)] <Bro666> Oh? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:17:25 (CEST)] <Bro666> Really? How is that? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:18:03 (CEST)] <bshah> Without going in much details, halium is one of platform Plasma Mobile builds upon. but is "hack" as I like to say [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:18:52 (CEST)] <Bro666> Okay. Enough bikeshedding. Put your quibbles in the task and we'll see [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:21:00 (CEST)] <Bro666> By the way, the theme was not shared ealrier because it came up in an email we just received this morning... [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:21:22 (CEST)] <bshah> (I will comment on task bit later) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:21:38 (CEST)] <Bro666> We being, [ade], eike and myself, as people who are more involved in the organisation of the events [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:21:51 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> ok, thanks for the update on the theme anyway, I wasn't aware there have been some developments on that, so I wanted to start a discussion here [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:21:52 (CEST)] <Bro666> Which brings me to: we need more hands on dekc at ELCE [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:22:01 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <skadinna> but it sounds like we pretty much have the theme sorted out, which is great [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:22:16 (CEST)] <Bro666> Well... it is not a done deal [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:22:49 (CEST)] <[ade]> this is why i need to catch up with elce stuff: we've got me and what, 1 or 2 people saying they'll be there? that's very very little. [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:22:56 (CEST)] <Bro666> It is Jens idea and I like it... I don't know what eike and [ade]think of it, or indeed the rest of Promo [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:23:08 (CEST)] <Bro666> Anyway, be as it may: we need more people for ELCE [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:23:21 (CEST)] <Bro666> We could make do with 3, ideal would be 4 [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:23:39 (CEST)] <Bro666> So far, I have commited to going, as has [ade] [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:23:46 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> <jriddell> if https://phabricator.kde.org/T9468 gets implemented then I'll join promo again and I can help out [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:26:15 (CEST)] <Bro666> Ok. Anybody else, just add yourself to tha task, please [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:27:10 (CEST)] <Bro666> I'm pretty sure we can get the Board to help with expenses, right Nightrose? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:27:23 (CEST)] <Bro666> As long as they are not too high, of course [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:27:45 (CEST)] <Nightrose> Yeah most likely [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:28:00 (CEST)] <Nightrose> (confirmation depends on details as always) [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:28:26 (CEST)] <Bro666> We'll figure out an budget for this task [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:29:40 (CEST)] <IrcsomeBot> * jriddell out [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:29:56 (CEST)] <Bro666> As we will probably recycle a lot or some of what we do at ELCE for QtWS, let's plan ELCE in detail first and then attack QtWs, yes? [lunes, 17 de septiembre de 2018] [18:32:16 (CEST)] <Bro666> Agreed?
