You can test this out without rebooting by checking (and if necessary modifying) /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save and/or /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save_controller . On my system these appear to be off (0 and N, respectively) by default. Or because I already discovered the setting via a control panel at some point and hoped it might decrease the lag between an event and the alert sound it causes.
