A preview is only useful if it's really bigger than the thumbnails: this is 
what the "thumbs and image" do. I don't know about you, but in the current 
version of Gwenview, i always find myself (and other users i am spying) 
increasing the thumbnail size until I can use them to preview my images. At 
this point, the preview widget below the folder view becomes useless as it's 
barely bigger than my thumbnails.

Nevertheless, I believe it would be a good idea, when using the "thumbs and 
image" mode with thumbns on the left, to be able to have several columns of 
thumbnails. This would be quite similar to what you get in the folder KPart 
of current Gwenview.
As screens become wider and wider, it makes sense to give the user the 
possibility to make maximum use of the available screen width.
