I'm part way through this process myself.

My understanding is:

Run avidemux with your avi file as input and select "auto" from the 
avidemux menu bar, then "dvd", then "save".

You will then have an mpeg file that dvdauthorwizard can use to make the 
directory structure and files needed for a dvd. If dvdauthorwizard makes 
the ISO for you then you can burn it, otherwise k9copy should make the 
ISO from the directory structure which can be burned by k3b.

I repeat that I haven't completed this process, it's just guess at the 
moment.
