k3b not playing nice with HAL?

Forgive my noobness. This won't sound very articulate, but I've had real
problems with k3b 1.69.0 and 1.70.0 today. [ 64-bit Sidux Install (debian
sid-based)]. K3b made 5 very nice coasters until someone in the Sidux irc
channel suggested starting k3b, stopping HAL, *then* starting the burn.
That finally allowed a successful burn.
Here's what I showed him that made him suggest stopping HAL as described
above:
