contrib/kpa-merge changes

I've made some changes to kpa-merge:

* Fixed a bug that resulted in undefined messages if there are gaps
  in the stack order.

* Added option for compressed output; by default, it uses the
  compression status of the first input file.

* Added option to generate either V7 or V8 output; by default, it
  generates the version of the first intput file.
