How to remove all desktop icons?

Hi, I'm trying to create a very minimal system and was wanting to remove all desktop items - however, I can't get rid of the Wastebin and the CD Recorder icons. Is it possible to do this somehow? -- Mark Whidby Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
