Naah, it was just a shot in the dark (where i am still ;)
The only way *_I_ know of that gives no feedback at all, is if somehow 
your kplato part is missing: libkplatopart.la
I think  in your case it should be in /usr/local/kde/lib/kde3/.
Does somebody else have a clue?
