Dave mentioned file previews, and I think he's right to do so. File previews are pretty useable, and as they improve they could solve your problem (for example, being able to define how large the preview is of kword documents, so you can see more of the layout and structure in order to gauge the content). However, icon preview performance may be pretty poor on a baseline machine. A delay isn't noticeable with any hardware considered state of the art within the past two years, but on an older machine file previews might be so slow that they need to be disabled.
