KDE 3.1/FBSD 4.8 slow start

Any idea why a fresh install of KDE 3.1 on FBSD 4.8
with xf86 4.3 would hang on 'initializing services'
(the little wrench :)) and eventually start?  Not sure
where to look or what to look at.  X log shows nothing.
