Can you try running as root 'fc-cache -f', and see if that helps?  

Several people have reported it as helping (it just regenerates the font 
cache, you need only do it once, or after installing new fonts by hand.  The 
ports now do it automatically, but this was only recently added, possibly 
after you installed.

Check also that you have a hostname correctly set in /etc/hosts
