Problem Building arts 1.3.0 for KDE 3.3

I run the arts configure. Everything seems to be ok except
that configure puts out a warning that I may need to set
LDFLAGS=pthread.
I do a make and link fails with a lot of undefined pthread calls.
I tried setting LDFLAGS=pthread (and other things) but then 
gcc complains about invalid arguments. 

I'm stuck. What do I need to set re pthread for configure so that make works?
