OK, I can agree with you here. 

What exactly is the technical reason you oppose Frans' patch? If we 
disallow new code with $id, why should we not remove existing 
appearances? The $id causes a number of small problems, after all.

Do you insist that all maintainers must agree with the patch before it can 
be applied, or should we simply wait a couple of days and if noone 
disagrees, ask Frans to apply?
