Actually, I ended up commenting the:

test -n "$LANG" && LANG=`basename "$LANG" ".UTF-8"

..from the startkde script which seemed to work just fine.

So, everything works now, but I doubt I'll use it since everything feels 
"slow" (e.g. slow window redraw, etc. even though render extension and 
glx are loaded).
