The problem persists across multiple system
re-starts. I have the same failure even when attempting to
uninstall in Safe Mode. The error message also occurs if I try to
reinstall 5.3.2 over itself.

Note that this is the same error message we had when preparing the 5.3.1 (I
think?) installers for a while. I think it also affected the uninstaller back
then. I don't know how it was finally resolved, but that might be related.
