that seems strange (my contacts on eeepc 701 work like they are supposed to).
maybe your contacts file is somehow corrupt due to tb export ?
try to check if it looks ok (should have only 1 BEGIN:VCARD ... END:VCARD 
block per contact).
the file is ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
