I found the new configuration files and the problem I mentioned has nothing to 
do with it. As said, expansion of the line 

default-transport[$ie]=$(/home/andre/bin/test-kmail-smtp)

in the mailtransports file does work, but a similar line

check-interval[$ie]=$(/home/andre/bin/test-online)

in kmailrc does not. I can change this last line, however, to something like

check-interval=13

and that value is then properly showing up in the Kmail configuration panel 
for the specific account.
