I have two IMAP accounts, one standard, and one gmail. I never, never have a
problem with the standard account. Occasionally a folder in the gmail
account gets stuck, and I just take a look at another folder and come back,
and everything is OK. When this isn't practical, I just restart kmail.

I understand the problems are not with IMAP but with dIMAP.
