well, he did it, so the problem is somewhere in his .kde directory.

I would first try to find out which component is causing the problem and
look at configuration/data regarding this component in .kde/* 

and what does .xsession-errors say?

also please check the permitions on the .kde files

may be he ran it as root and it got the file permitions changed and now it
can not read them ... who knows.
