Try to get some hints from a terminal (xterm, konsole).
Assuming 'Allan' is your account, login as allan or open a konsole session
'pwd'  shoud return '~/allan'
Then enter 'kmail' and write down messages printed out to your console,
looking for errors and warnings.

In case you are not the owner of some files in the .kde/, recover the
correct setting by the command

  sudo chown allan.allan .kde -R
