If you type 'today' in the quick search field and if you use the fancy date, i.e. the date of messages received today is shown as "Today hh:mm:ss", then only messages received today and messages where "today" appears in some other field (e.g. the Subject field) are shown. Very often I enter 'day ' into the quick search field to get all messages received in the past 7 days.
