Upgrade Suse 11.1, mail lost

I just upgraded from Suse (10.3 or 11.0) to Suse 11.1.  When I went to 
read my mail with kmail, the link said there was no "type" description 
on the desktop file, yet the data is there when I look at properties.  I 
went to the "menu" and dragged to the desktop, an icon was created, 
which ran kmail yet it cannot see my existing mail.  I searched and 
found the mail directories, but I do not know how to modify the new 
kmail (kde 4.x) to find my existing mail.

Help?
